Australian beef plants extend holiday closures

Recent droughts have meant record cattle slaughter, but this has left the herd low and in need of rebuilding.
Observers say it will offer rivals Brazil the chance to supply to fill the beef gap in the US.
"This is a once-in-a-generation decline but unfortunately we can expect herd numbers to stay significantly low for at least the next two years as cattle producers rebuild," Tom Maguire, general manager at meat exporter Teys Australia, told Reuters.
Volkswagen and several tanneries will also close for extended periods over the holidays, an indication of fewer orders.
