Colombia opens to US beef

06/01/2016
US beef suppliers have gained full access to Colombia for the first time since 2003, after the country removed BSE-related restrictions on certain bone-in cuts.

Beef derived from Canadian cattle imported into the United States for direct slaughter may also now be exported to Colombia.

Cheyenne McEndaffer, US Meat Export Federation technical services manager, said the new ruling will have the added benefit of lowering production costs because export verification programme requirements are no longer in place.

US beef exports to Colombia reached about $14.5 million in 2014, but fell in 2015.
