Cargill to cut cattle antibiotics by 20%

11/03/2016
Meat packer Cargill is beginning to cut the use of antibiotics in its cattle, with the aim of reducing drugs deemed important for human use by 20%.

The changes affect about 1.2 million cattle annually, which represents about 18% of the cattle Cargill processes, according to a report on Reuters.

In November, the World Health Organisation called on livestock farmers to restrict their use of antibiotics in animals following the discovery of mcr-1, a gene that can make bacteria resistant to even so-called “last-resort” antibiotics.
