Cargill moves away from cattle feeding

US beef and cattle group Cargill has reached an agreement to sell its remaining beef cattle feed yards to ethanol fuel producer Green Plains, in a move designed to allow it to focus on growing its protein business.

The company said the deal for the feed yards, which are located in Leoti, Kansas and Yuma, Colorado, will be completed once a definitive agreement and regulatory review are complete.

Green Plains will supply cattle to Cargill through a new multi-year agreement and the employees currently employed at the feed yards will be offered positions with Green Plains. The yards currently have a capacity of approximately 155,000 cattle.

John Keating, president of Cargill’s protein business operations and supply chain, said selling its two remaining feed yards would allow the company to divert more working capital towards its protein business.
