Indonesia increases beef import quota ahead of Ramadan

The quota is more than double the 10,000 tonnes recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture and follows on from President Joko Widodo’s instruction to reduce beef prices from Rp110,000 ($8) to 80,000 per kilogramme ahead of the start of Ramadan on June 7.
“We will import the beef from various countries,” said Trade Minister Thomas Lembong. He declined to name the countries from which the beef would come but added that Indonesia wanted to diversify the sources of its beef imports.
