Indonesia launches e-commerce drive to aid farmers

12/04/2016
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has taken steps to shorten the distribution chain between farmers and consumers with the launch of an online marketplace for agricultural products.

According to communications and information minister Rudiantara, the e-commerce initiative will help farmers improve the marketing of their products, as well as sustaining food supply and maintaining price stability.

The scheme will make use of new Android-based applications, developed with the help of Indonesian start-ups, and the government will put measures in place to ensure farmers unfamiliar with digital technology are comfortable using them.
