Indonesia’s government has announced a new helpdesk that will aim to prevent layoffs in the footwear sector. Footwear is one of three labour-intensive industries that the government suspects may be particularly vulnerable to job losses at a time when the economy is sluggish, the local currency, the rupiah, is weak and imported raw materials, including leather, have become more expensive.
Companies will be able to call the helpdesk to discuss problems they are experiencing and receive specific advice on how to address their difficulties.
