Hermès sales growth slows

28/04/2016
Luxury goods group Hermès reported slower sales growth in the first quarter of 2016 due to reduced tourist activity in Europe and the economic slowdown in China.

Revenue in the first three months of the year was up 6.2% to €1.19 billion, compared to the 7.2% growth recorded in the last quarter of 2015. Overall growth in revenue for last year was 8.1%.

There was an increase in revenues across all geographical regions, Japan leading the way with 13%. Growth in America was 4% whilst Europe saw 9% growth despite the reduced presence of tourists due to recent terror attacks in Paris and Brussels.

By sector, leathergoods and saddlery led the way with a 15% growth in revenues but the ready-to-wear and accessories division, which includes footwear, saw a 2% drop. The silk and textiles division was impacted by slowing sales in Greater China and America, registering a 9% dip in revenues.
