Corn-fed crocodiles to boost profitability

Padenga Holdings, a Zimbabwe-based crocodile skin processor who provides materials for luxury handbags and shoes, has announced plans to boost profitability by feedings its animals a corn-rich diet and giving them more space. These steps are designed to help the crocodiles grow faster and improve the quality of their hides.

“For the next one year to 18 months, our focus is to expand the facility, without drastically expanding the volumes,” says Padenga’s finance director, Oliver Kamundimu.

The crocodiles “are fed pellets of fishmeal, vitamins, minerals and corn,” a tactic which “has worked well for us with improved growth rates and happier crocs,” adds Kamundimu.

The company’s net income for 2015 rose to $7 million from $6,4 million in 2015.
