Leather Pipeline: Chatter from APLF
Despite a reduced Chinese presence, the Asia Pacific Leather Fair was generally regarded as a success, according to our exclusive Leather Pipeline report.

The author spoke to numerous hides sellers and tanners in Hong Kong, and said most were happy.

“Nobody really expected to sell much leather during the show, but the majority of exhibitors were happy with the numbers of old and new customers passing by," the author said.

“As far as visitors are concerned, the quality has generally gone up and people came with clear interest and intention; they knew what they were looking for and whom they needed to speak to.”

However, there was reduced number of visitors and exhibitors from mainland China. “It is clear the boom in China is over. The benefit of much cheaper production costs is, in most cases, over and the strict policy on environmental issues has also taken a lot of the cost advantages away.”

Depending on origin and price levels, the majority of tanners are seeing leather demand below what they need and they don’t expect it to improve in the coming three to six months.

However, upholstery is providing a bright spot with several tanners suggesting their production should grow by between 20% and 30% over the next year.
