Heading into the Asia Pacific Leather Fair next week, US hides sellers have the upper hand over European counterparts – the opposite of the situation at the Hong Kong event last year.

In our exclusive Leather Pipeline report, we hear that currency fluctuations are having the most impact on the supply chain.

The demand for cowhide that was seen before Christmas has dried up – with some reports of resales and shipping delays as tanners change their minds.

The author says: "Almost weekly, one can read about tanneries closing in China, sometimes for environmental reasons, other times part of the government’s plan to restructure industries they don’t consider to be necessary for the development of the country. This could be defined in a different way: the tanning industry is in a phase of major restructuring that we see once in a decade."

However, there is good news from the split market as shoe manufacturers place more orders.
