Paraguay: Fish leather shoes attracting interest from Taiwan

16/10/2015
Six small footwear companies in Paraguay, which together form AFCC, the footwear industry association in the town of Carapeguá, have secured their first orders for shoes that use tilapia leather. Retailers in Taiwan have commissioned the Paraguayan manufacturers to make and send 1,000 pairs per month of men’s dress shoes with uppers in the fish leather.

AFCC has said potential customers in Argentina and Chile have also asked for samples.

The head of leather at Paraguay’s national technology institute (INTN), Carlos Bordón, said on announcing the Taiwanese deal: “This proves that we [in Paraguay] can use tilapia leather in our footwear production, that it is viable. Tilapia is a fish with extraordinary qualities and, if you get the processes right, it gives leather that is very noble and very environmentally friendly.”
