In it, it uses the work Timberland has done as part of the Leather Working Group as an example of best practice.
LWG is a multi-stakeholder group that assesses the environmental performance of tanneries and around 99% of Timberland’s leather comes from gold or silver rated operations.
“In an example of brands sharing best practices in sustainable materials, the Vans brand has adopted Timberland’s standards and produced 25% of its leather products using LWG certified leather in 2013,” said VF.
As a group, VF is on track to meet its 2015 goal of reducing carbon emissions by 5%, and the company is now powering 31 of its facilities in part with renewable energy.
The report also introduces a new chemical management program that the group will scale up during 2015. CHEM-IQ has been developed in collaboration with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and provides a cost-effective and scalable method for identifying and eliminating potentially harmful chemicals before they enter the manufacturing process.
Letitia Webster, director of sustainability for VF, said: “With a centralised, global reporting infrastructure in place, we turn our focus to enhanced alignment and collaboration across our company to minimise our environmental footprint and spark innovation, while more effectively sharing our progress with all stakeholders."
