Timberland nears 100% LWG silver and gold tanneries

28/11/2014
Footwear group Timberland is a step closer to having all of its tanneries rated silver or gold by the Leather Working Group, after its third-quarter corporate social responsibility report showed 99.6% of leather volume came from businesses at this level.

In the second quarter, 93% were gold or silver rated.

At the end of 2013, 92% of all tanneries had achieved silver or gold status compared with 85% of tanneries 2012. Timberland explained that two tanneries were rated lower: one was its only source for US tanned leather, a requirement for some products, and the other had an issue with its wet blue supplier, which caused it to lose the rating.

It is unclear whether Timberland has changed suppliers to increase the proportion, or whether the tannery in question has now passed the audits to take it to the required threshold.

The Leather Working Group is a multi-stakeholder group that assesses the environmental performance of tanneries and awards gold, silver or bronze status.
