Timberland says using ‘emergency’ tannery affected its LWG goals

Footwear group Timberland has said it sourced 99.4% of leather volume from silver or gold rated Leather Work Group (LWG) tanneries in 2014, representing 93% of its suppliers.

This was up from 92% in 2013, 85% in 2012 and 83% in 2011, but in 2010, 96% were at this standard and 92% in 2009. It is unclear for the decline in 2011, but the US company said by next year, all tanneries will be silver or gold.

“During 2014, two tanneries provided leather to Timberland that were not silver or gold rated, one of which was used for a very short time in an emergency situation and was subsequently dropped,” said the company.

“The small volume of leather that is not from silver or gold tanneries demonstrates our commitment to limit production at non-certified tanneries until they produce aggressive work plans and set dates for re-audits to achieve certification.”

The Leather Working Group is a multi-stakeholder group that assesses the environmental performance of tanneries and awards gold, silver or bronze status.
