Swiss mull certified leather proposal

Swiss politician Maya Graf has proposed a certification system for animal skins that come from Switzerland, suggesting that consumers are increasingly keen to know the origins.

However, with only one tannery in the country, the majority of skins are exported, so observers such skin exporter Centravo have questioned the financial viability of a Swiss label. The group exports 16,000 tonnes of skins, or 850,000 pieces a year, to France and Italy. This is 90% of national production.

Philippe Marmy, from a slaughterhouse in Estavayer-le-Lac, also has reservations and told local press: “I do not see the point at this stage, given that almost all the raw material is exported.”
