Tannery of the Year: Innovation Award winner

04/09/2014
For the second time, the Tannery of the Year Awards included a special prize for a piece of innovation that finalists had displayed during visits to their facilities by the World Leather team.

From the Tannery of the Year reports that appeared in the magazine in the course of the fourth programme, World Leather picked out two examples of innovation from each of the nine finalists.

A panel of judges comprising previous global Tannery of the Year winners selected one example and awarded the Innovation Award for 2014 for the tannery responsible.

On this occasion, the winner was Couro Azul from Portugal, whose chief executive, Pedro Carvalho, received the award from Jon Clark, the chief executive of PrimeAsia.

Mr Clark and his fellow judges, Thomas Strebost of Heller-Leder and Reg Hankey of Pittards, chose Couro Azul as the winner for its use of a special table, lit from below on which flesh splits are trimmed after lime splitting. The light helps expose any faults and gouges in the croupons.
