Consolidation in New Zealand’s tannery sector

“It’s a smart strategic partnership where we are collaborating to avoid duplication and to create additional value for our farmers and shareholders in the sector,” said Silver Fern CEO Keith Cooper.
“The industry needs to work together to ensure it is sustainable and this partnership shows we are committed to following through with our intentions.”
Silver Fern will cease rendering at the end of September, outsourcing to Lowe and Wallace. Wallace Meats, the meat processing arm of the Wallace tannery group, was acquired by Silver Fern Farms in 2011.
New Zealand imported $2.7 million of raw hides and skins in 2012 and exported $317 million.
