New Zealand tops the list of beef exporters to the US

03/04/2013
For the first time in its trading history, New Zealand is exporting a higher volume of beef to the US market than Australia.

Figures for the first quarter of 2013 show that New Zealand’s beef exports to the US were 43% higher than during the same quarter in 2012, exceeding 30,000 tonnes. Cattle slaughter in the country over the same period was 52% higher than a year ago.

Australia’s exports over the same period, at less than 30,000 tonnes, showed a decline of 0.3%, while the figures for Canada, in line with Australia’s, represent a fall of 29.2%.

Industry observers have said that the figures for Canada have been affected by lower cattle numbers in Canadian feedlots and by higher values of the Canadian dollar.
