Kering highlights tanning as it reports leathergoods sales of €3.5 billion
Leathergoods brands under the Kering group have reported another year of growth – albeit at a slower pace than previous years – and the group hailed its new tanning process in its financial statement to investors.

Leathergoods made up more than half of the sales in Kering’s luxury division in 2013 – EUR 3.5 billion – with Gucci providing 55% and Bottega Veneta 16%.

Sales at Gucci were flat for the year, but Kering said: “Products in pure leather and precious skins increased again during the year. For example, no-logo handbags accounted for almost half the product category’s overall revenue, versus 37% in 2012.”

Kering’s main shoe brand is Sergio Rossi, but most of its larger brands, including Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga, also offer shoes.

In July, Gucci announced that it had developed an “innovative methodology to reduce the environmental impact of the leather tanning process”. Kering said this metal-free tanning process is “a way to satisfy the modern consumer’s desire for ethically-produced, sustainable fashion products”.
