Japan-based leathergoods manufacturer Hiroki is set to start production in Ethiopia in March, producing leather garments, bags, wallets and shoes for export to the Japanese market.

Youngil Song, president of Hiroki Addis, said: "We decided to open a factory in Ethiopia because of the availability of quality leather raw material. It is one of the finest leathers in the world."

Hiruki's leather jackets are reportedly sold for between $2,000 and $5,000 in Japan.

"Hiroki's decision to invest in Ethiopia is welcome, as it focuses on high quality products," Tadesse Haile, state minister for industry, told local press. "They recognise the unique character of Ethiopian leather."
