Horse leather tannery joins Japanese pavilion at APLF
A horse leather specialist is among Japanese tanneries exhibiting at the upcoming Asia Pacific Leather Fair in Hong Kong, under the umbrella of the Japan Leather and Leather Goods Industries Association (JLIA).

Arc Leather Japan is based in Himeji and also uses cordovan, which it says is suitable for shoes and small leathergoods but was difficult to handle in the past. “Our company has developed new manufacturing technology to make this leather shrink naturally,” it said.

“The high quality of Japanese leather is internationally recognised,” said Kojiro Iwasaki, chairman of the JLIA. “In recent years, there have been efforts to improve the raw materials by working together with environmentally friendly facilities and public institutions. Although the scope of the projects may be small, this small scale will provide for distinctive, high-quality goods.”

Six other tanneries will be joining Arc in Hong Kong: Tatematsu, Sanyo Leather, veg tanner Phoenix, pigskin specialist Wadu, and Sakamoto, which produces leather for kendo (Japanese fencing) chest protectors.
