Scottish Leather Group nears net-zero targets
Scottish Leather Group (SLG) has added a 33,000m2 solar panel ‘farm’ – which will provide a quarter of its electricity – at its production facility in Bridge of Weir.
The photovoltaic array will provide energy for all SLG companies, including Bridge of Weir Leather and Muirhead, helping to reduce their environmental impact.
SLG’s manufacturing of leather is set to be net zero (Scope 1 and 2) by the end of this year, achieving a target set in 2018 – 20 years ahead of Scotland’s net-zero ambitions. Its leather has a carbon footprint of just 8kg CO2e/m2 on average, helping its customers reduce their carbon impact without offsetting.
Dr Warren Bowden, head of innovation and sustainability at SLG, said: “Over the last two decades, Scottish Leather Group has continuously invested in strategic initiatives designed to optimise and improve the sustainability and circularity of our leather production. With our new solar PV array, we are taking a step forward in the self-generation of on-site clean power, removing grid reliance, which further supports us as we rapidly accelerate towards achieving our target of 100% zero greenhouse gas emissions for our operations.”
Bridge of Weir Leather celebrated its 120th anniversary this year while Muirhead marked its 185th.
