Recruitment drive at Scottish Leather Group

08/11/2022

Scottish Leather Group (SLG) has recruited more than 380 people since the start of 2021 and has now announced that it plans to hire 60 more in the coming months to help it fulfil “a new pipeline of orders”. These orders are from automotive customers including Aston Martin, JLR, Polestar and Lucid, and from aviation operators including Emirates and Spring Air.

SLG said the covid-19 pandemic and the requirement for businesses to offer additional cleaning and hygiene services was one of the factors that had caused the demand for its leather to “increase dramatically”.

Chief commercial officer, Nicholas Muirhead, said: “We have seen businesses across the world reassess their supply chains and focus on durability and environmental impact, reaching the conclusion that leather is the best product on the market to meet that challenge.”

Within that, he said the leadership position SLG has built up in delivering low-carbon leather was helping it make a positive impression. Its claims are based on detailed lifecycle assessment data, hides sourced from close proximity to its facilities in Renfrewshire, south of Glasgow, an abundant on-site water supply and its own waste-to-energy plant.

He explained that SLG has earmarked further investment of £13 million in sustainability projects that will enable the business to become net-zero by 2025.

“We have seen demand continue to build as sustainability reaches the top of the agenda for businesses on a global scale,” Mr Muirhead said.
