Swiss watchmaker uses local wild deer hides

A new partnership between two Swiss companies, mechanical watchmaker Oris and deerskin brand Cervo Volante, has resulted in a selection of three luxury Big Crown Pointer Date watches with straps made from the hides of wild Swiss red deer.

Cervo Volante was founded in 2017 on the principle that hides from the 15,000 wild red deer which Switzerland culls annually could be used to manufacture sustainable leathergoods. “We elevate what others discard, to show the beauty in what’s wild,” the brand’s website copy reads.

It now specialises in making shoes, accessories and jackets, all of which are tanned in Bern using a vegetable-based, barrel tanning method that is free of chromium and synthetic pre-tanning agents, the company explained. The brand added that it employs the two remaining Swiss tanneries which specialise in veg-tanned leathergoods in the making of its products.

Oris described joining hands with Cervo Volante - part of its eco-minded Change for the Better campaign, which has been running for over a decade - as “the next step” in its commitment to improving its watch straps’ sustainability credentials.

The trio of Oris x Cervo Volante watches feature colour-coordinated, alpine-inspired dials (in either grey, blue or green) and straps (brown, oak brown or cognac). They are not limited-edition and “nor is this a one-time deal”, Oris said.
