Ecco teases its new leathergoods arm
Danish footwear and leather group Ecco is set to launch a new leathergoods brand on September 7, following what it said had been two years of intensive consumer research, product development and leather experimentation.
Aimed at what it described as the “new utopian” shopper (“a progressive new consumer who cares about responsible production”), all the leather used to craft the nascent label’s handbags and accessories has been supplied by Ecco’s gold-rated tanneries, as certified by the Leather Working Group.
Only the “most innovative” Ecco leathers have been used for Ecco Leather Goods, according to the new brand, including the business’ “eco-conscious” DriTan (meaning tanned without water) leather and what it stated were “certified sustainable” textiles, including recycled cotton and recycled polyester, in the making of the bags’ lining, webbing, mesh, zipper taping and threads.
While the team behind the label stated that its leathergoods have not only been “exceptionally” crafted to last, but are also highly functional, it acknowledged that there is “never a guarantee” that they won’t ultimately be landfilled.
Therefore, it said that Ecco Leather’s applied sciences team is currently exploring innovative upcycling techniques for both production and end of life, “including a completely new textile that’s spun from leather shavings”.
