$3.6 million online handbag auction sees Christie’s set new record
The New York arm of international auction house Christie’s recently achieved around $3.6 million in sales following an online handbags and accessories auction, which ran from May 26 through June 9.
The sale set a new record for a handbags department sale in New York and demonstrated the strength of the market for second-hand luxury bags, the company said in a press release.
Registrants from 41 countries participated in the online event, 35% of whom were new to Christie’s.
Most notably, a rare Hermès matte bleu Faubourg Birkin 20 (pictured, right) from the collection of respected Hermès collector, consultant and curator JaneFinds sold for over twice its original estimate, achieving $200,000.
Meanwhile, a Hermès Himalaya Birkin 35 realised a sale price of $137,500 and a salvator lizard Kelly 25, also by Hermès, sold for $81,250. A limited-edition bleu Cargo Birkin 35 by the same brand achieved $62,500 against its low estimate of $15,000.
