Leather artworks to form fruit of 2021 LVMH Métiers d’Art residency
Luxury group LVMH has chosen Franco-Danish painter Eva Nielsen as its LVMH Métiers d’Art 2021 artist in residence.
Ms Nielsen will work with artisans at LVMH-owned Tanneries Roux, which is based in the south-eastern Drôme region of France and known for its “pioneering" use of calf leather, as the Financial Times described it.
The group described the leather manufacturer’s craftspeople as having “exceptional savoir-faire" in calf leather tanning and finishing in a press release announcing the artist’s selection.
Expected to spend her six-month residency crafting works of art which combine silk as well as leather, Ms Nielsen will therefore also collaborate with French silk atelier Twinpix, well-regarded for its double-sided printing technology, according to LVMH.
LVMH chief strategy officer and president of LVMH Métiers d’Art, Jean Baptise Voisin, commented: “Each year, the LVMH Métiers d’Art artist in residence programme is a new six-month adventure during which an artist has a chance to engage deeply with a manufacturer known for its unique quality.
“This year, we are particularly pleased to engage the encounter between Ms Nielsen and two manufactures working with materials as different as leather and silk. We with the artist and the teams at Tanneries Roux and Twinpix an exciting creative journey for this new residency and look forward to discovering the fruits of this encounter.”
