Kanpur tanneries closed - again

08/10/2019
More than 100 tanneries in the Indian city of Kanpur have been closed again, following a partial reopening in the summer.

For several years, Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board has been testing effluent from tanneries in the district, and revoking licences.

In August, Kanpur District magistrate Vijay Vishwas Pant ruled 101 tanneries could reopen, but only if they operated at half capacity.

Local press have reported that 122 tanneries have been closed again, after the common effluent treatment plant was found to be discharging water into rivers that did not meet the required standard.

However, there have been other reports recently that link the closures to political views.
