Limited production for Kanpur tanneries

20/08/2019
Following their closure ahead of the Kumbh Mela festival in November, Kanpur District magistrate Vijay Vishwas Pant has ruled 101 tanneries can reopen in the Indian city, but with restrictions on their production.

The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board will allow the tanneries to reopen on the condition that they halve their production and modify their infrastructure to fall in line with anti-pollution standards.

Additional tanneries whose owners claim to have fulfilled all requirements are still awaiting inspection, according to local reports.

Halving production will reduce the load on the treatment plants and officials have not ruled out the possibility of rescinding the stipulation, depending on how the tanneries function.
