Brazilian meat and tannery group JBS has announced its subsidiary Pilgrim’s Pride has bought pork supplier Tulip for £290 million.

The company claims to be the UK’s biggest pig farmer and pork supplier, with 17 production facilities and a turnover exceeding $1 billion.

Jayson Penn, Pilgrim’s CEO, said: “The transaction represents the logical next step in our evolution to expand our geographical footprint, enhance our value-added portfolio and reduce volatility across our business with a more stable margin profile.”

Pilgrim’s employs more than 51,400 people and operates chicken processing and prepared foods facilities in the US, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Europe.
