Meat processing and leather manufacturing group JBS spent more than $20 million on animal welfare in 2018. The company revealed the figure in its April 2019 newsletter.

It said more than 13,000 of its employees in Brazil have undergone animal welfare training because of the “intimate link” between animal welfare and the quality of its meat and hides.

JBS also carries out training programmes for the livestock farmers that supply its cattle and conducts frequent audits at its own cattle slaughter facilities.

“Any breach of policies by employees or suppliers will attract disciplinary action,” the newsletter said, “and may lead to termination of employment or supply agreements.”
