ICLT to host skills and training workshop at new campus

30/07/2019
The new headquarters of the Institute for Creative Leather Technology (ICLT), located on the University of Northampton’s new campus, will in September host a workshop to discuss skills and training for the European leather industry.

The event on September 19 is the UK workshop for the EU-funded Social & Environmental Reporting 2020 (SER) Project 2020, an initiative that aims to evaluate the environmental and social status of the European leather industry. It is a follow-up to the 2012 SER project.

The workshop will consider the training and development needs for the next generation of leather industry employers. The confirmed speakers are:

Rachel Garwood, director of ICLT, who will discuss the current status and developments in higher education for the leather industry;
John West, skills and training manager at UK Fashion & Textiles, who will speak about apprenticeships and fitting the needs of employers, among other topics;
Gustavo Gonzales-Quijano, secretary general of COTANCE, who will address the Skill Sectoral Strategy, which is being developed within the Skills4Smart Textiles, Clothing, Leather and Footwear Industries 2030 programme.

In addition, a representative of the Scottish Leather Group will discuss this organisation’s experience of apprenticeships and the other training initiatives it runs.

The workshop will be followed by a tour of the new teaching facilities and tannery at ICLT. Those interest in attending should contact Kerry Senior at Leather UK (kerrysenior@leatheruk.org).
