Welsh plant will be Aston Martin’s ‘home of electrification’

Aston Martin will make the all-electric Rapide E model at the new plant in Wales, starting in 2019. The Rapide E will be Aston Martin’s first all-electric production model.
Now the factory, located in the village of St Athan, has also been named as the home of Lagonda. The Lagonda brand is more than 100 years old and was acquired by Aston Martin as long ago as 1947. The company has been working to restore the Lagonda brand and has now decided to make it “the world’s first luxury marque exclusively driven by zero emission powertrain technologies”.
Production on the new cars will start in 2021. Aston Martin introduced the ‘Lagonda Vision Concept’ (pictured) at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March.
On making the announcement, chief executive, Dr Andy Palmer, said: “Aston Martin sees itself as a future leader in the development of zero emission technologies, and I am delighted that St Athan will be our home of electrification for both the Aston Martin and Lagonda brands. The Rapide E will spearhead development of Aston Martin’s low- and zero-emission vehicle strategy. With the reintroduction of the Lagonda brand, this is a demonstration of how electrification features prominently in our business plan moving forward.”
