Leather’s image top cause for concern for UK industry

Leather’s misrepresentation has been named as the number one concern of the UK leather industry, according to a survey by UK Leather.

The body issued the questionnaire at the end of last year to determine the most pressing issues and find out how businesses wished to be supported.

Many felt addressing leather’s image was key, and a British leather mark would be the best way to highlight quality. “A project is under way to determine the viability of this and feedback is welcome,” said UK Leather.

In terms of strengths, the high quality, craftsmanship and Made in Britain scored the highest, with the UK’s high animal welfare standards and traceability of products coming a close second.

In terms of weaknesses and threats, an ageing workforce and lack of skilled staff were also flagged as concerns, with potential risks and opportunities from Brexit scoring moderately in each category.

As highlighted it its five-year plan, published last March, UK Leather has set out plans to counter mislabelling leathergoods and increase training opportunities within the sector.
