Leather and meat professionals get together in Northampton
19/02/2015
Meat industry representatives had a tour of the facilities, including the institute’s onsite tannery and leather conservation centre. The visit concluded with a broad discussion about the carbon footprint of leather, chaired by World Leather editor, Stephen Tierney.
During the discussion, Dr Kerry Senior, director of the UK Leather Federation, gave a summary of the ongoing debate the leather industry is involved in at European level on the subject of defining the lifecycle environmental impact of leather and visiting professor to the university, Mike Redwood, gave a synopsis of how this issue affects tanners and meat companies.
Afterwards, the chief executive of the IOM, Keith Fisher, said: “The visit was extremely informative. It has been an educative and enlightening experience for us all. The meat industry often thinks the process finishes as the abattoir door closes and doesn’t think about where the hides go afterwards.”
