Hugh Gilmour, managing director of Paisley-based tannery W J & W Lang, part of Scottish Leather Group, has been elected as president of UK Leather Federation (UKLF) for 2012–13.

The key objective of UKLF is to be a “focused, authoritative and influential body” representing the interests of the UK leather industry as a whole.

Mr Gilmour’s role will be to act as the public face and spokesperson of the organisation, as well as taking views of the membership into consideration. In addition to representing and hosting UKLF events in the UK, he will also co-host a reception in Hong Kong at the time of the APLF event at the end of March with the Master of The Leathersellers’ Company, Miles Emley.

Lang celebrates its 140th anniversary this year and Mr Gilmour has been instrumental in the progress of the company, having worked there for 41 years. Formed in Paisley in 1872, it is the oldest manufacturing company in the town still producing on its original site. It employs 60 people.

The tannery supplies wet blue and wet white hides to group companies Bridge of Weir Leather and Andrew Muirhead & Son for finishing and onward supply to the automotive, aviation and contract furnishing industries, with clients including Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Volvo, Aston Martin and Ford.

On learning of his election to the UKLF position, Hugh Gilmour said: “I am delighted to have been elected to represent the UK leather industry at home and abroad and look forward to my new role with enthusiasm.”
