Severe job losses hit Tunisia’s leather industry

08/02/2018
The secretary-general of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), Noureddine Taboubi, has told local media that nearly 40,000 people working in the country’s leather industry have lost their job as a result of the closure of 300 companies.

Speaking at a congress dedicated to the textile, clothing, leather and footwear sectors, Mr Taboubi said workers, company owners and the government all have a responsibility to help rescue the Tunisian leather industry.

He added that the leather sector’s contribution to the GDP of the country and to job creation means strong efforts must be made to guarantee its survival.
