Canadian beef industry welcomes EU deal

Beef producers in Canada have welcomed the long-awaited signing of a trade deal with the EU, which is likely to boost the country’s exports of agriculture and food products.

The Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed in Brussels on October 30 by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and leading EU officials. It had previously been held up after an objection from a Belgian region.

The deal, if ratified, will remove 98% of tariffs on goods traded between Canada and the EU.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) congratulated Mr Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland, the country’s International Trade Minister, for agreeing the deal.

It said that the elimination of tariffs means the EU has the potential to become a $600 million annual market for Canadian beef. This compares to current levels of $6-$10 million per year.
