Two major leather industry players join ZDHC
The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) group, which campaigns for hazardous substances to be eliminated from waste streams in the fashion supply chain by 2020, has added PrimeAsia Leather Corporation and leather chemicals manufacturer Stahl to its list of contributors.

Launched in 2011 to promote sustainable chemistry in the production of consumer goods, Amsterdam-based ZDHC now has 22 signatory brands, 11 value-chain affiliates and four associates contributing to its work. The group wants to harmonise standards across the textile and footwear value chain. A key component of its programme is its manufacturing restricted substance list (MRSL).

“Standard setting, collaborative implementation and industry engagement are all key to driving the success of the programme forward,” said executive director, Frank Michel, on announcing the new signatories. “We’re encouraged to see growing support for our work because one brand or supplier cannot achieve this alone.”

One of the new contributors, Stahl, made a point of saying that a new portfolio of sustainable leather finishing products it launched at the end of August was fully compliant with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals MRSL. This portfolio, Stahl Neo, consists of 400 products.
