Indonesia “abolishes cattle quotas”

27/09/2016
Indonesia has abolished its quota system for imports of cattle, according to the country’s trade minister, Enggartiasto Lukita.

Local media sources reported that Mr Lukita said companies will be allowed to import livestock as long as they abide by a trade rule introduced in August, which requires one in every six imported cattle to be for breeding purposes.

"If (companies) want to import, they will likely be allowed to, provided they import breeding (cattle) because this country needs a (cattle) population,” Mr Lukita was quoted as saying.

He added that three companies have already been granted permits to import a total of 300,000 feeder cattle through to the end of 2018. 60,000 cattle will be imported for breeding.
