Indonesia searches for alternatives to Australian beef

11/08/2016
Reports from Indonesia say the government is in talks to start importing beef from Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Spain in a bid to end Australia’s dominance of the imported beef market there.

Beef consumption in Indonesia is going up, from an average of 2.3 kilos per person per year in 2012 to 2.6 kilos in 2015. Importing beef to help meet demand has been essential, with Australia as the main source (almost $250 million worth in 2014), followed by New Zealand in a distant second and the US third.

The government in Jakarta has become concerned at the high price of Australian beef and has said it wants to look for alternatives.
