Indonesia begins buffalo meat imports from India

05/09/2016
Indonesia’s government has said consignments of buffalo meat, imported from India, have begun to arrive. Its aim is to import 80,000 tonnes of buffalo meat from India before the end of 2016.

Government officials have said explicitly that the attempts to encourage the consumption of buffalo are linked to a desire to reduce Indonesia’s reliance on imported beef from New Zealand and Australia. It has sought alternatives in the face of rising beef prices.
