Re-opening of Zimbabwe tannery delayed

The re-opening of Wet Blue Industries, formerly one of Zimbabwe’s biggest tanneries, has been delayed until the government announces its fiscal policies for 2016.

The tannery was due to re-open at the end of August but suppliers of raw hides have requested a delay until the announcement of the government’s mid-term budget, which is expected to be revealed shortly by finance and economic development minister, Patrick Chinamasa.

Wet Blue Industries judicial manager, Chrispen Mwete, said the supplier are hoping the finance minister will lift a ban on the exports of raw hides, which came into force in 2014.

In July, leatherbiz.com reported that the tannery was planning to capitalise on a large stockpile of hides from various suppliers and restart operations
