Zimbabwean tannery to re-open

Wet Blue Industries, one of Zimbabwe’s biggest tanneries, is set to re-open. The tannery has been closed since October 2015, after being placed into liquidation a year earlier.

The tannery is hoping to capitalise on a large stockpile of hides at the Cold Storage Company (CS) abattoir, with which it was formerly affiliated. Machinery at the facility in the city of Bulawayo is being serviced in preparation for a resumption of operations.

“We’re hoping that come August we would be re-opening as we have a few leads where people, including CSC among others, have indicated that they will supply us with raw hides for processing,” said Wet Blue judicial manager Chrispen Mwete.

“If we were to have continuous operations when we re-open, it would only take us 18 months to come out of judicial management,” he added.
