Ms Sturgeon and Mr Mackey were given a tour of the tannery’s facilities by Colin Wade, Muirhead managing director. They observed the manufacturing processes taking place in the factory and met some of its workforce, including apprentices from the company’s training academy.
The Scottish Leather Group is currently working on plans to expand production at its sites in the west of Scotland. This is already underway with the acquisition of the adjoining property of the Muirhead factory. Its parent company will be investing £10 million over the next three years to increase production capacity to meet demand both domestically and abroad. There was also been recent investment in technology, innovation and staff, including research into digital print technology and a new testing laboratory.
"Andrew Muirhead is a remarkable success story with over 175 years of history behind it and a bright future ahead for its staff,” Ms Sturgeon said. “The £10 million investment plan being announced by the Scottish Leather Group today is testament to the company’s desire to add to its global reputation for quality and find new markets for the product that’s made here in Dalmarnock and at other sites in the West of Scotland”.
Muirhead’s Apprenticeship Academy offers training programmes in engineering, and leather production and manufacturing. It was launched in 2012 as part of the talent strategy of The Scottish Leather Group.
