The winner of a new competition that’s challenged young designers to produce unique upholstery designs using leather photo printing technology will be announced on May 26.

Glasgow-based tannery Andrew Muirhead & Son launched the competition, the Muirhead Leather Design Competition, as part of its 175th anniversary celebrations. As well as its tradition of producing high-quality leather for upholstery, Andrew Muirhead wanted to celebrate recent breakthroughs in printing high-resolution digital designs onto leather.

It asked design students in the UK to come up with a leather-upholstered piece of furniture that uses the new technology in its production. Andrew Muirhead managing director, Colin Wade, is one of the judges for the competition.

The winner of the competition will receive a three-week work placement at Muirhead in Glasgow, an additional work placement at a furniture company, plus a £1,000 cash prize. There will also be a runner-up prize of £500. The chosen design will be unveiled at The Furniture Makers’ Company’s annual dinner in London in October.
