Visit to accelerate beef trade between Brazil and US

Inspectors from Brazil’s ministry of agriculture (MAPA) recently visit slaughterhouses and meat storage facilities in the US as part of an effort to expand beef trade between the countries. The Brazilian technicians are visiting the US plants to examine their production methods.

The trip aims to encourage an agreement between the two countries to allow the trade of bone-in beef products. This forms part of a wider trade negotiation for the purchase and sale of fresh beef.

According to Brazil’s Secretariat of International Agribusiness Relations, an agreement could see an increase of $900 million per year in Brazilian beef exports to the US. An agreement is expected to be in place by July 28 and the first shipments of beef will take place within three months.

In November 2015, a group of US veterinary technicians spent eleven days in Brazil inspecting slaughterhouses in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo.
