Michael Kors targets men to boost growth

Leathergoods brand Michael Kors is aiming to address a slowdown in growth by increasing its focus on menswear. The brand wants to extend its appeal beyond its traditional base of female customers, after handbag sales were sluggish, in part due to a drop in tourist spending.

“Michael Kors is really going deeply into the menswear business,” said company CEO, John Idol. “We’ve made a statement that we believe this will be the next great extension of growth for our company.”

As part of the strategy, the brand was signed a partnership with the McLaren-Honda Formula 1 racing team. The deal will see the fashion house create a limited-edition men’s leather jacket, which will be sold exclusively in its new store in London’s Regent Street. Michael Kors branding will also be featured on the Mclaren driver overalls and on its current McLaren-Honda MP4-31 car.

Mr Idol added that the company plans to accelerate the rollout of its menswear line, which will include new designs in sportswear and leathergoods. It also intends to launch more smartwatches.
