France: Fire destroys ancient tannery site

26/08/2015
A fire has engulfed the site of a former tannery in Rennes, north west France, which local press describe as a major monument in Brittany’s industrial heritage.

At the turn of the 20th century the tannery was one of the largest employers in the area.

Local reports said tanneries had been on the site since the Middle Ages, including Zwinglestein and, later, Tanneries de France. However, the site was abandoned in 1948.
